luke chapter 10

a short summary

verses 1 - 12

  • jesus sends out seventy disciples to go and spread the word of god to places/cities in order to prepare these for christ's visit. he instructs the disciples as to their conduct regarding blessing and the healing of the sick.

verses 13 - 16

  • jesus comments on those cities which will not receive his disciples and the doom and destruction awaiting them.

verses 17 - 24

  • jesus rejoices at the return of the seventy disciples and the positive feedback from them. jesus mentions that he saw the devil fall from heaven like lightning, illustrating the victories his disciples attained. he then also thanked god for the results of his missionaries.

verses 25 - 28

  • in answering a question by a lawyer, meant to trick jesus, as to the way to inherit eternal live, jesus confirms the lawyers answer that you must love the lord your god with your whole heart, your soul, strength and mind and that you must love your neighbour like yourself.

verses 29 - 37

  • seemingly not convinced, the lawyer then asked who your neighbour is, upon which christ narrated the parable of the good samaritan.  it is a beautiful explanation of the law of loving our neighbour, without regard to nation, party, or any other distinction. the lawyer eventually had to acknowledge  that the samaritan was the good neighbour.

verses 38 - 42

  • jesus visits the home of martha and mary. while martha scurries to provide for christ, mary sits at his feet listening to his words. upon martha remarking that mary should assist her with house hold chores, jesus says to martha "...Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.", meaning that nothing is as important as our relationship with christ.

and here the eternal journey begins...

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

"Ich bin der Weg!", antwortete Jesus. "Ich bin die Wahrheit und das Leben! Zum Vater kommt man nur durch mich.
